Jochen Furthmüller defends his thesis successfully. The entire research group shares his happiness. We congratulate Jochen and wish him all the best for his future career at itk (Abb. 1).
Lars Völker and Bernhard Hurler defend their theses successfully. The entire research group shares their happiness. We congratulate and wish them all the best for their future career (Abb. 2).
From March 25th to March 30th, the IEEE INFOCOM 2012 (Abb. 3) took place in Orlando/Florida where researchers from all over the world attended. At the "Global Internet Symposium" workshop, Bernhard Heep presented the OverArch architecture which was a joint work with Ingmar Baumgart, Christian Hübsch, and Amos Brocco at the Institute of Telematics. OverArch combines the worlds of structured and unstructured P2P overlays.
From the 25th to the 27th of June, the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona (Sweden) hosted the 8th Euro-NF Conference on Next Generation Internet. This year the focus of the conference was on wireless networks and future network architectures. Ingmar Baumgart presented the paper "Fast but economical: A simulative comparison of structured peer-to-peer systems", which was a joint work with Bernhard Heep of the Institute of Telematics.
The first »Workshop on Telecommunications: from Research to Standards« was held at this year's ICC 2012 where Martin Röhricht presented the paper »Advanced Quality-of-Service Signaling for the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)«, a joint work with Dr. Roland Bless. Due to the high number of submissions the workshop was extended to cover two entire days. The workshop was very well attended and was basically related to the question how industry and academia could be better connected, especially in terms of standardization processes. Furthermore, an interesting panel discussion about this topic was held together with Joe Touch (ISI) and Heinrich Stüttgen (NEC).

On June 15, 2012 the First International Workshop on Novel approaches to Energy Measurement and Evaluation in Wireless Networks (NovaEnEv) took place in Ottawa, Canada in conjuncation with the International Conference on Communcations. Out of 20 submission the TPC selected 9 papers for presentation and discussion at the workshop. The workshop was chaired by Torsten Braun, University of Bern, Mesut Günes, FU Berlin and Martina Zitterbart, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The workshop was organized by Christian Haas and Joachim Wilke, both members of the research group of Martina Zitterbart at Institute of Telematics (Fig. 4).

On June 18th/19th the University of Newcastle (UK) hosted the Nokia Mobile Data Challenge workshop as part of the "Pervasive 2012" conference. Before the workshop, the members got access to a data set which covered the mobile smartphone usage of about 30 users during the timespan of 2 years. The members analyzed this data set as part of dedicated and open challenges in regards of the data structure and behavior predictability and presented their results in Newcastle. Fabian Hartmann presented the poster "MobReduce: Reducing State Complexity of Mobility" which approaches the sensible reduction of such complex data amounts. It was a joint work with Christoph Mayer and Ingmar Baumgart.
